Petals in the Patriarchy photo series features Chef Erin Kem

Indianapolis photographer Sarah Jehoiada’s project “Petals in the Patriarchy” explores femininity in stereotypically masculine spaces through an ongoing collaboration with Frida's Flowers.

In part seven of the series, Sarah worked with Chef Erin Kem to focus on the women in the kitchen.

womxn are often told to stay in the kitchen…until they turn it into a professional career. and even then, they are often automatically assumed to be bakers and pastry chefs. even though there are more female managers and owners of restaurants than in any other industry — and half of all U.S. restaurants are owned and co-owned by women — out of 403,000 people employed as chefs and head cooks, only 29% are women. (from the U.S. bureau of labor statistics)

chef Erin Kem of Nicole-Taylor’s shows up for this installment of Petals in the Patriarchy in HER kitchen, channeling every amount of rage from years of experiencing misogyny in culinary arts — all while serving up the beauty and femininity of the florals around her.
